Date: 5/15/2009 Title: Tatyana Ali Goes Out with a Bang
I had to pleasure of cutting and styling the hair of the Ali family last Saturday, some of my favorite ladies in the world to work with. Tatyana, Anastacia and Kimmie wanted fresh looks for a pre-Mother's Day Dinner. Tatyana was excited to be heading to the White House on Tuesday for a Poetry Night Dinner with the Obamas. Tatyana wanted something different and suggested I cut her a bang. I cut her a short bang last summer, but everytime I saw her, her hair was pulled back in a ponytail. So I asked her "Are you sure you want a short bang?...Are you really going to rock it this time?" She wanted to go for it all the way, though I was still a little aprehensive to take 4 inches off of her bang so drastically. I cut it right at her brow line and straightened her bang with a mini flat iron. She said thanks and jetted off to the dinner. I don't even think she looked in the mirror. That's what I love about Tatyana is that she is not a Prima Donna, she never would complain about her hair and she totally trusts me with her look.
So imagine how pleased I was this morning to log on to www.TheYbf.com and see a huge picture of Tatyana, rocking the heck out of her new bang! She was in D.C for her monumental meeting with the President of the United States and you can tell by the photo that she feels super confident with her new look. She looked ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS!

Q. I am an African-American female with natural hair. My hair is very thick. The texture is average- not coarse. I would like to know what is the best type of curling iron to use on my hair? For years I have used Gold N' Hot's and I always smelled my hair burning. Recently, I have begun to use the ceramic flat irons and they seem to straighten my hair without the burning smell but the "bump" in my hair doesn't last and it falls flat.
There are soooo many irons out there I don't know which one is best. Cermaic? Titanium? Gold n' Hot? etc..... Please help!!
A. Hi Vita, great question. When I'm on set, I have three brands of plug irons that I like to use. For curling irons I use Hot Tools & Gold N' Hot brands. I love the Flat Irons by Jilbere of Paris Porcelain Series. I think the great thing about a Gold N' Hot is that it gets just as hot as a Professional Marcel Iron in the stove. But the key word here is professional and if you're not a pro, you can easily burn your hair right off with that extreme heat! So it's important to start off on a medium heat setting and then slightly increase the temperature as needed instead of turning it up to the highest setting and testing it on your hair. Rest your hot curling iron on a white paper towel or tissue paper. If it's too hot, you will be able to see brown singe/burn marks on the paper.
To hold your curls longer, always start with clean hair and lightly mist it with a holding spray or protectant spray before you beging styling. You may also want to try rolling your hair with hot rollers or velcro rollers to give your hair volume while keeping frizz and heat damage to a minimum.

Date: 10/12/2007 Title: How Do I Apply My HH&W Lace Wig?
Wig Application Things you need to apply your wig: Your Hollywood Lace Wig Adhesive, tapes, remover, skin protector Transparent sequin thread All purpose comb Rubbing alcohol Scissors Wig cap Hair clips
1. Prep your hair by wrapping or cornrowing it flat. 2. Put on your wig cap.(Optional) 3. Cut off the excess lace from your new wig. 4. Clean your skin/hairline with alcohol. 5. Apply a thin coat of skin protector.Let dry for 1 minute. 6. Apply a thin coat of adhesive to your skin. Let dry approximately 10 minutes. 7. Apply a thin strip of tape over the adhesive.(Optional) 8. Apply another thin coat of adhesive on top of the tape. Let dry 10 minutes.(Optional) 9. Place the wig on your head and press the lace edges into the adhesive area with your comb's teeth. Use the clips to keep the hair from getting caught in the adhesive. 10. Bend your head down when applying the wig to the nape area with adhesive. You may also choose to sew your sides and nape down with the transparent sequin tape instead of gluing it. 11. Allow your adhesive to dry. You may tie your edges down with a scarf overnight to improve adhesion. 12. The finished hairline should look totally natural, as if the hair is actually growing from your scalp.
